What interests you about the coffee business?

Similar to food, Travelling around the world and seeing coffee enjoyed differently than how it’s guzzled in North America was pretty eye-opening . Elsewhere, people enjoy the taste of coffee but also the coffee experience. For example, in Italy, you never have a coffee to go. You always stay in-house for the coffee. And people take at least 10-15 minutes per day just to enjoy their coffee. Japan, a relative newcomer to the coffee world, brought their ceremonial aspect of tea-making to their enjoyment of coffee. So for them, enjoyment of coffee was more ritualistic and they enjoy the manual aspect of coffee brewing. That aspect of bringing something global back to Toronto, and providing people with a better mindset to start their day was what we were after. So whatever we serve, we serve it with a very approachable customer experience. So customers can learn more about their coffee, and be mindful of what they are consuming.

What do you think is the top trait for great customer service?

It is a difficult question. I would say to cater to everyone’s unique needs. Some people want to get their coffee as fast as possible. Some people like when you call them by their names. Some people like when you can converse and make jokes. In our minds, tailoring the customer experience to each unique individual is how we can create great service.

How did you come up with the name strange love coffee?

Very simply, it is just about a shop showcasing all the things in life that we have a strange love for. Great love, great coffee, great art & design. It is the great love we have of different things.
